When I equip armor the textures do not appear in game. I have named each of the textures diamond_helmet, diamond_chestplate, etc. because I have each of the textures for each piece of armor individually. I understand that it is normally supposed to be named diamond_1 and diamond_2, where diamond_1 would be helmet, chestplate, and boots, while diamond_2 would be leggings. But the textures I want to use are each individual. I have each texture for the helmet, boots, and chestplate separately. When I name each one diamond_helmet, diamond_chestplate, and diamond_boots, it doesn’t work in game, what do I name each texture to allow them to work in game?
I believe the texture atlas feature can also do something, but I'm unsure how that might work, or if it works at all, since you're not changing the reference texture in some file, but the texture atlas where the referenced texture gets written to.

To understand how textures are used in a resource pack, you should first look into the assets of the version you want to use it for.
I recommend reading Look-Up Table.
