I was mining Nether Quartz a little bit ago, and noticed there's a lot of Gravel, but no sand. I "Hmm" ed to myself, wondering why Nether Quartz can't be around/turned into Nether Sand (aka White sand).
Or vice versa. Nine NetherSand equals one Nether Quartz, then, of course, Nine Nether Quartz to one Block of Nether Quartz.
I love Nether Quartz, and there's sand and even Red Sand in the Overworld. So why not have Sand in the Nether?
The Nether does have sand, in the form of "soul sand", though it doesn't behave like sand does.
Otherwise, "nether sand, or "quartz sand", as I call such a variant of sand, seems a better fit for the Overworld; imagine white sand beaches or even deserts. Red sand seems like a better fit for the Nether given the general color theme.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
I wouldn't mind pale white sand in the nether. Strong whites are a hellish colour.
