Ghosts would be a mob that spawns uncommonly, and can spawn in light. They could do other things but my main idea is that they could extinguish torches and campfires. This would be a mob to counter just making your base invulnerable by getting rid of some spawn proofing. An idea i had was they could have a 10% chance of spawning when killing a zombie, and lanterns would be untouchable by ghosts, giving an incentive to use them. Soul fires could maybe be used to counter ghosts, perhaps soul campfires could suck them in, and soul torches could just be immune, also giving use to soul fires. movement could be similar to vexes. ghosts could have one health so you can just punch them to get them to disappear. they could make some type of noise to alert you when they are coming for your torches. ghosts would not try to attack the player, just extinguish their torches.
(credit to hylent for helping me flesh out this idea) (i came up with them extinguishing torches, he came up with details and soul stuff)
My idea of Ghosts being added to the game would consist of jumpscares mostly, not the extinguishing of torches which let's be honest, would be unpopular as there are a lot of players who simply hate their bases getting griefed, even in survival.
And to have mobs be capable of such a feat would go against the point of even adding spawn proofing mechanics in the first place
Granted, if it only happened in the case of killing an undead mob, then the situation would be entirely avoidable still by simply avoiding combat with a Zombie, Skeleton or even a Phantom, but in so doing, players also lose out on the opportunity to earn their drop items.
I don't know how I feel about this one, your suggestion is still giving players a choice in the matter, and that their actions would be directly responsible for the spawning of the Ghosts which seek out and blow out the torches, because if they kill a Zombie, it is their fault, but it still sets a nasty precedent in mob griefing which clearly not every player is going to like. Just because players are not playing on peaceful difficulty does not automatically mean they are okay with mobs invading their bases every day of the week to cause problems, but on the other hand, it is too easy to spawn proof, which may have contributed to the addition of mobs like Pillagers and Phantoms.
