Ngl this new update sucks imo and caused me a lot of issues to update my own server but it's fine now anyway. Hopefully they release something more useful rather than useless animals and armor...
I thought that wolf armor was a good enough idea that I "backported" it to a mod for 1.6.4 (sort of, since it works differently, more like horse armor, including tiers from iron, gold, diamond, and my own amethyst material, and being able to be enchanted with protection-type enchantments):
Actually, I'd thought of this long before Mojang ever did, the first mention is in a file dated from October 2022 as part of a list of future ideas; I basically used the textures they made as a base for my own:
Future ideas:
- add wolf armor (render over body using an enlarged model, much like player/horse armor; use same armor point system as horse armor)
(as an aside, I recently realized that horse armor, at least in 1.6.4, doesn't actually render like other mob armor, it is literally just overlaid over the horse's own texture, not as a separate model, probably because the old model is so complex and it would be too difficult or laggy to render an entire separate overlay)
Also, see that mob on the right? That's another new mob being added in 1.21, "Bogged", a variant of skeleton that spawns in swamps and shoots arrows that deal Poison; likewise, the brown spider is a special variant of spider that spawns in certain biomes and deals twice as much damage (spiders are quite weak, dealing only 2 damage, so even double that is still only 4) and inflicts Weakness and Slowness. It is a fact that for every person who complains about "useless" new mobs there is another who complains that there aren't enough mobs, or enough variety, even if it is just new rabbit colors (or wolf variants, which also now spawn in more biomes so they are easier to find) to match the biome, etc.
In all seriousness though, this update actually makes a ton of background changes that are good for the game. It pretty much rewrote how most block and entity properties in the game are stored and processed.
I think the armadillos are cute.

So that explains how Mojang was able to add over 3 MB of bloat to the game (and probably at least 100x that in memory usage):
I simply cannot even begin to fathom how Mojang made even 1.8 larger than a massive total conversion mod which has had over a decade of major content updates; the last update alone added over 100 new blocks and items, yes, over 100 (not all are even listed as I didn't feel like listing every variant of glowing and hanging sign). 1.20.5? Well, just armadillo scutes and wolf armor:

Fun fact: the mob on the far right is one Mojang plans to add in 1.21 so I'm already ahead on that front (it is technically already in 1.20.5 due to the "experimental update" feature). I also made wolf armor enchantable, as well as horse armor (both work the same way and are treasure items found via chest loot):
Sure, green villagers/nitwits were always in the game but never really used, even in modern versions, while I gave them a proper profession, trades, and house (this is also true of various other things I've added but had little/no/broken functionality in vanilla, outside of custom maps/editors/commands, some of which did receive official updates to properly implement them, such as bark logs and sponges):
Here is a very long list of every block, item, etc that I've ever added, maybe the most interesting thing is the number of blocks, yet I've still used only 207 IDs out of 256 due to extensive use of metadata and even tile entities, or just "render states", like fence connections, snowy grass etc (IDK why Mojang made these actual block states in 1.13, or why when they added fences for other wood types they made each one a separate block ID, or why they didn't just make commands read names like "pink_wool" as equivalent to "35:6" (i.e. eliminating the need for ID:metadata values in commands, which was the whole point of the "flattening" (I've actually done the exact opposite to many vanilla blocks). They did add support for up to 4096 block IDs in 1.2, much less this many ID:metadata values before then, but never bothered making use of them, claiming they were "running out" of IDs. Funnily enough, Bedrock did the right thing, at least for a while):
A list of all new blocks and items sorted by their ID and data values, and other features. Includes vanilla
blocks/items with altered IDs/data values or now obtainable as an item; excludes non-real variants (e.g. fence
connections, upside-down stairs and slabs, stalagmites, etc).

Plus tons of new worldgen features, the main point of the entire mod; like how many types of caves exist in 1.18?
And the size of the modded jar didn't even grow by 200 KB in the last update and is still smaller than even 1.8 - and a good amount of that is unused vanilla code (I've removed over 200 classes from MCP, which are still inside the modded jar itself since my own code is added on top of the vanilla code instead of replacing it, except for the classes which I directly modified, this also explains most of the the increase from TMCWv4 to TMCWv4.5 as that was when I moved to putting all my code into my own classes). And still uses only as much memory as vanilla 1.6.1 (from an old screenshot somebody else posted), while 1.20.5 appears to default to 4 GB now and can't even run on 32 bit at all (not that its necessarily a bad thing given how long it has been since 64 bit CPUs and OSs came out but it shows it is now so bloated it just can't run within 1GB anymore):
(see also: I cannot comprehend the memory usage of modern and modded Minecraft, which only strengthens with every vanilla update, or every time I see somebody saying "I allocated 16 GB to a modpack yet it still has memory/garbage collection issues", not helped by the number of people who think none of this matters, "I have a 5 GHz 32 core CPU with 64 GB of RAM and a RTX 4090", Well, not the average Minecraft player (myself? My first computer was a hand-me-down which was already 4 years old when I got it, plus 3 more years when I started playing the game; my current system would be higher-end - if it were still 2013, when quad-core was still considered uncommon; this discussion from 2016 says that dual-core was still perfectly viable and all most people needed). Also, if you look at the list of Minecraft.jar file sizes you'll find something very interesting; hint: I started playing on 1.5, the last update for which is included, as well as that for 1.4)
Ngl this new update sucks imo and caused me a lot of issues to update my own server but it's fine now anyway. Hopefully they release something more useful rather than useless animals and armor...
I agree.
New animals and armors would be good for 1.21 instead.

People will complain about anything.
And update has an update process (and caused unmentioned issues) and adds content. Therefore it's bad?
Hope they fix it soon
I thought that wolf armor was a good enough idea that I "backported" it to a mod for 1.6.4 (sort of, since it works differently, more like horse armor, including tiers from iron, gold, diamond, and my own amethyst material, and being able to be enchanted with protection-type enchantments):

Actually, I'd thought of this long before Mojang ever did, the first mention is in a file dated from October 2022 as part of a list of future ideas; I basically used the textures they made as a base for my own:
TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
its bad
I think the armadillos are cute.
In all seriousness though, this update actually makes a ton of background changes that are good for the game. It pretty much rewrote how most block and entity properties in the game are stored and processed.
Praise be to Spode.
I think the changes would be fine if there was a bigger update that they made and the rest would just be extras.
Because I actually kind of liked the updates, the only thingit was missing was a bit more things to add. :/

Funnily enough, Bedrock did the right thing, at least for a while):
blocks/items with altered IDs/data values or now obtainable as an item; excludes non-real variants (e.g. fence
connections, upside-down stairs and slabs, stalagmites, etc).

Also, if you look at the list of Minecraft.jar file sizes you'll find something very interesting; hint: I started playing on 1.5, the last update for which is included, as well as that for 1.4)
TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
