Introducing Better DawnCraft! A community patch for the popular DawnCraft modpack
This patch adds tons of quests, clearer explainations of game mechanics, more mod details, an overhaul to the buggy reputation/villager quest system, balance changes, bug fixes, and additional mod support to add commonly requested features like improved storage and more trinkets.
Better DawnCraft is less than 10mb in size, will not affect your save data and will be compatible with future DawnCraft updates. Patched modpacks remain compatible with all DawnCraft servers, but patched servers will require players to also have patched clients.
This project requires DawnCraft to be installed. Found HERE
Latest tested DawnCraft version is v1.12
Installation and updating:
HOW TO INSTALL
To apply this patch to DawnCraft, simply drag the contents of this folder into your DawnCraft directory, and overwrite the existing folders/files when prompted. That's it!
You must have launched DawnCraft normally at least once before installing this patch, and you will need to close Minecraft before installing.
You can find your DawnCraft file directory via the settings button in your DawnCraft profile in the CurseForge launcher (Settings>Open Folder)
IMPORTANT: Always backup your save file in the "saves" folder before installing a patch or updating DawnCraft
UPDATING DAWNCRAFT
If you update DawnCraft to a newer version, you will need to repeat this process. This will not affect your quest progress or save file.
UPDATING BETTER DAWNCRAFT
To install a newer version of the Better DawnCraft patch, simply repeat this process with a download of the newer patch version.
The old files will be overwritten with the new ones, and you will have all of the updates applied automatically. This will also not affect your save.
Features:
Over 100 new quests via FTB Quests which explain gameplay mechanics, teach players about the included mods, provide new progression goals and offer unique rewards.
Offers solutions to fix common bugs, such as a new option to replace lost quest maps from villagers and alternative methods to obtain important items which could otherwise lock progression.
Overhauled villager reputation and quest system. All quests are now available at the start with equal rarity, and are lo longer locked behind reputation. Quests that previously offered reputation rewards now give items. Reputation no longer affects trade prices (these are now fixed values). Negative reputation will not drop as low, making it easier to restore and progress.
Game mechanics are clearer than ever. DawnCraft has a reputation for being a little too cryptic, and most players do not finish the modpack. this patch makes the gameplay clearer, and the modpack far more accessible.
Support for new mods, such as Iron Chests, Tom's Simple Storage, Clumps, Cosmetic Armor, Seasons HUD, Overloaded Armor Bar, and exciting, unique quest rewards from Enigmatic Legacy.
Balancing tweaks. Many configs have been altered to improve game balance and fix bugs.
...And much more to come! This patch will be updated over time based on community comments and feedback.
FAQ:
What is a modpack patch?
A patch is just a series of folders containing config files, mod files and some support files such as images. These folders correspond to the the usual folders in a modpack (such as config, mods, scripts) and replaces some of the modpacks files when you copy this into its directory. 99% of the modpack is untouched, and this just updates and adds a few files here and there.
Will this affect my save file?
No, this doesn't touch save data. It works similarly to updating a modpack. Even your existing FTB Quests data in your save file will be compatible with the new quests added by this patch, and will remain compatible with future patch updates. As a general rule however, you should always backup your saved before updating or installing anything new.
Does this take anything away from the original developers of DawnCraft?
No, the original modpack is required to be able to use this patch, and this patch cannot be used as a substitute. Anyone using this patch has already downloaded DawnCraft legitimately. This pack contains none of the original intellectual property of the creators, just configuration files.
How do I install the patch?
See the "Installation and Updating" section.
Can you add <insert feature here>?
Possibly! Leave any suggestions for future additions in the comments. This can include mod support, config changes, new quests, rewards, mods you'd like to see more quests/explanation for, balance changes, and anything else you can think of.
Can you fix the performance of DawnCraft?
No, not really. Some tweaks can be made here and there to make small gains, but 99% of the potential performance issues are due in part to the number of mods included, but more importantly the types of mods included, and how they work. To make DawnCraft run well on lower end PCs would be to remove most of what makes this modpack special in the first place.
What's wrong with DawnCraft? Is this some kind of slight against the modpack creators?
No, and in fact I have nothing but respect for the creators. I have seen some people call the pack "lazy", among other things, due to some of the complaints from the community such as a lack of FTB Quests, optimization issues and common bugs. The fact is - this pack undoubtedly took a ton of work, and contains some of the most customization I have ever seen. Many mods were developed specifically for this pack, tons of custom content was generated, and just the time spend on custom configurations appears to be significant. I have poked around in the files more than most to put this pack together, and there is a lot of complexity here (which has made my job harder!). The pack is a marvel, and I have only put this much work into "fixing" it because I believe in its potential. I think most issues are game philosophy ones, not technical ones, and the changes I have implemented are in the spirit of more accessible game design and fulfilling player's wishes.
Who are you? Where did you come from?
I'm a former modpack author with a lot less time for building entire modpacks. The packs I used to make were generally pretty complex. I was more active on the Technic platform back in the day, but have moved over to CurseForge. Some of the modpacks I've made include The Epic Mod Pack, Catch N' Slash (modded server), TerrorCraft (modded server), Craft n' Slash, and Farming & Adventure RPG (still available on CurseForge).
Planned features:
Potential Ice & Fire support.
More quests, including more "collect them all" type quests to encourage broader gameplay and mod completion
More dimensions? Maybe.
More balancing tweaks based on feedback
More villager trades (including wandering trader)
Update drops from tumbleweed (currently only drops a few vanilla items)
Update dungeon loot (less bread and leather, make it fun to loot again)
