First off, if you can help it, don't get old. Things don't get any easier, and that sux.
I am 72 and NOT a gamer, but the wife has been. Started late and the arthritis in my hands prevents lots so I just play Minecraft in creative mode. We have a PS3 and PS4, I started MC on PS3 then went to PS4 version, which I don't like much because of how some controls changed....and I don't do change well. Another thing I find really confusing is all the 'versions', Java, Bedrock, PS3/4, etc., and I REALLY hate infinite worlds. Might as well call it the Alzheimer Edition because getting lost is so easy.
So I need help understanding world saves/transfers/copies. I just bought external drives for both machines and had a shop check out the PS4 for a memory error I was getting. Before I took it in, there were a couple worlds I created on PS3 that I had....what....."imported"? into the PS4. I still have those worlds on the PS3, but they are now missing from the PS4 and I have forgotten how to get them into the PS4 so I can play therm with all the latest aquatic-type updates in "Editions".
I'm not worried about what was lost, mostly junk, but the 2 worlds I really want to see on the PS4. My memory is that I coupld play those worlds on both platforms, but there was no cross-platform action going on, they were 2 seperate games.
What's throwing me is I have this impression that worlds cannot be 'copied', but rather 'transfered'. Can I keep the worlds on the PS#, but also transfer/copy them to the PS4 machine? I'm pretty sure that's how I had it before.
Thanks for any help, and please be gentle. Don't assume I understand all lingo or procedures. Dumb it down to about 6th grade....
It's been ages since I played my PS3 or PS4, and I've never transferred any worlds. However, it is apparently possible to transfer worlds in the way you describe. This Cnet article seems to have a good overview: Transfer old Minecraft data to your PS4 or Xbox One - CNET
I also see you're confused about versions, so here goes, I'll try and explain:
Minecraft is basically split into Java edition and Bedrock edition - what you use depends on your device. There are also small gameplay differences.
1. Java = computer-only version. The original version of Minecraft.
2. Bedrock = A newer release of Minecraft that allows cross-platform playing (players on multiple different devices can play together now). It works on PS4, Xbox One, Windows 10/11 computers, and mobile phones.
3. Legacy/console versions refers to Minecraft for old consoles (PS3 and Xbox 360). There is also MCPE/pocket edition which was the old Minecraft for mobile phones. Both of these I just mentioned were replaced by the Bedrock edition.
Lastly, I saw your other thread voicing concerns over infinite worlds and combining blocks from different texture packs. Both of these things are possible to fix on Java edition using mods (add-on modifications to the game). Unfortunately it would be hard or impossible on consoles like yours.
