Minecon was an annual event, where the mojang team gave speeches and talked about their future plans, each year it was held in a different place (like a festival).
Now it's not called Minecon anymore but it's called Minecraft Live, and it's held every year on the minecraft youtube channel! The event lasts a few hours and there is talk of future plans for the next versions of the game.
People used to get special capes from Minecon conventions, now Minecon seems to be only a media event (seeing as covid is definitely a threat, this makes sense)

yes they were the original capes optifine just copied them there were also other REAL capes givin out to players who helped or did something for Mojang, you can see them all on this website Minecraft Capes | NameMC

I mean its literally a convention where you be apart of your community be yourself and meet more of your own community that you love soo yea.
