You can look at the date, then the following page, giving you an idea of the latest version that could have been used (Beta 1.4, which is very, very old, with the game changing so massively it may as well be a totally different game by now, including world generation, which last changed on a large scale in 1.18, then again in 1.7, then again in Beta 1.8, so you have at least 4 major versions, then there is release 1.2, which rearranged biomes when it added jungles. I'm less sure about older versions, I know Alpha and Beta are different):
Also, a "perfect 16x16 square island" is almost certainly a chunk error, which were quite common back then, and even still occur in the latest version, and will not be reproducible (it would be easier to tell if the image still existed but even the OP said it was probably a chunk error):
