i just played my hardcore world a 2 years ago. this world is my proud i survived a 1 year and 16 days.
my death is so dumb) i go to nether and just smacked to wall lol.
I think I've lost everything to lava at least 5 times... One of the most memorable was falling into a ravine, and panicking so much that I was incapable of pressing the correct keys or think of a way out. Def LOOSE EVERYTHING those first times.
Each time though - I replicate "what went wrong" so it won't happen again.
The latest was just yesterday, although I didn't die due to having a God apple on the hotbar (and then ender pearled out). Got knocked off the top of bastion, easy mistake. Thought I had a potion of fire resist, but did not (it was strength! haha), anyway first reaction was to place blocks, as had 'plenty of time' with the Fire Prot IV - but you can't place blocks as the structure floats on the surface!! Unless you place them UNDER the lava then across, which takes a fair time.
Then tried it a 2nd time (to practice) couldn't get it done fast enough to be sure of not dying; had a fire resist potion this time when I was taking too long.
Gravel might have worked - hey at least use for the junk stuff the piglin trades.

Ouch, that’s rough! I feel your pain. I had a similar experience:
Ventured into the Nether to farm some quartz. Had a full inventory of quartz, glowstone, and even some ancient debris. Feeling confident, I decided to take a shortcut across a lava lake using a stack of gravel.
Misjudged the distance, placed a block too far, and before I knew it—fell straight into the lava. Tried to swim out, but it was too late. Lost all my loot and my will to play for the day.
Lesson learned: always keep a fire resistance potion handy!
I was exploring the cave, I came to an uphill bit with a big lava flow rolling down, so I dug into the rock beside the lava to carve out some steps so I could climb up beside it.
But then I dug one spot which revealed a big deposit of gravel. The gravel fell on top of me, knocked me into the lava flow.
The ironic thing is, despite the fact that I was CLEARLY playing in "Survival" mode, I didn't survive.
Before you get Totems, potions and all that... one of the best things you can do is get Fire Prot IV on a piece of diamond gear - it's possible pretty early game really, once you've got a village or even an enchant table. It gives you so much more time to get out of your situation, esp if you've got a waterbucket handy somewhere.

Half a stack of diamonds and was strip mining. Looked away for one second and lost everything.
