I'm sure there are threads about this all over the place, but we WiiU owners are our own breed. And some of us (like me) are experiencing Minecraft for the first time now. So I figured I'd gather some thoughts ...
In my world and in the world that my son and I share, I've come across a TON of obsidian now and have been mining it out steadily. The enchantment table is up and now I'm wondering ... at what point would you say that one is 'ready' to enter the Nether? What kind of supplies are needed in order to make a go of it? When I go, what should I be looking to accomplish there?
You want a full set of at least iron armor as well as at least an iron sword. You'll also want a bow and plenty of arrows to deal with ghasts. Some dirt for filling in holes and blocking off lava is also handy as well as flint and steel in case your portal gets blasted. Lastly I would say cobblestone to build a small base around the portal to prevent the aforementioned blasting of your portal, cobblestone is impervious to ghast explosions.
As for goals once you're there, you can collect netherrack to craft into nether bricks if you want. You can also collect nether quartz. The most important thing to find is the nether fortress. Inside you'll find blazes, from which you'll get blaze rods for a potion stand, as well as the nether wart which is the base ingredient in any potion. You'll want to collect a few blocks of soul sand as well so you can grow more nether wart at home. There's also several chests of loot within the fortress.
Once you've got higher level equipment you can hunt for wither skeletons in the fortress to collect 3 skulls and summon the wither.

Awesome! Thanks!
By the way, I decided to just try it out ... built the portal and saved the game, thinking I wouldn't last very long in there.
It looks like I came out the other side IN the nether fortress. There are walls everywhere ... I already found one chest to loot (that had iron horse armor and some gold in it) ... I took out a monster spawner that was spawning blazes ... managed to kill a number of blazes, wither skeletons, magma cubes, and accidentally a zombie pigman ... found some nether wart (but didn't know to collect any soul sand) ... got a whole bunch of blaze rods and some other ingredients, etc. So it turned out to be an OK first trip it sounds like.
BTW ... my portal keeps making noises, which begs the question ... can anything just walk through my portal into the Overworld on its own? Am I just going to wake up one day to find a Wither Skeleton came through from the other side?
Yes, anything that walks into the portal will go through it. You'll probably want to put some walls around the portal to make sure things don't start wandering around your house. You can also turn the portal off at any time by dousing it with some water.
This was actually a great topic, thanks Balderdinger! I KINDA knew what to expect, thanks to my 8 yr old son having played the PE version on iPad, but the WiiU is my first go 'round, too! Fortunately, thanks to the kid, I knew that Cobblestone was impervious (how did he know that specific word? Lol), so that was helpful! I used a portal as an "escape" from my first major project, a dungeon from the NES Legend of Zelda, but now I may be rethinking that exit.... However, I used a Ghast as the "boss", and it was interesting to note that one should have a bow and arrows handy.... Which is actually the first "major" weapon reward in the LoZ game! Perhaps I should rethink my strategy within the build, as this might it make it too "easy"? My ultimate goal is to recreate the world of the original NES game, but after reading this, I may have some redesign issues... Pertaining to this issue, though, I HAVE had a few worries, as in, I was under the impression that one step in the Nether equals two in the "real" world? Maybe I have that backwards? Also, is it possible to position your entry and exit portals exactly where you want them?
I couldn't find specific information for Wii U but in the 360 edition the ratio of overworld to nether is 3:1, I assume it's the same in this version. Yes it is possible to link two portal exactly, you just have to find the exact corresponding location by using the coordinates and converting with the 3:1 ratio.
cobblestone? sure, it works. Glass though. just barely harder to get, but you can see if there's anything outside your glass "room" with the nether portal in it, and Ghasts can't see through it, unless that was changed? so yeah, glass should be much more useful than cobblestone, although admitably somewhat riskier as if the ghast sees you outside your "room" it can still blow the glass up.
hello and first of all I'd like to say thanks for the topic because I'm a Wii U minecraft player and I'm playing for the first time now actually and I know it's 2021 LOL. but all the same since I've gotten into the game I really love it and I'm starting to get in depth into it and I'm looking around for some helping people that are still playing. My NNID is Jarowe if anyone is still here
Hi guys i dont really have many friends in the wii u and im looking to see if there is any people i can play with my nnind is "alfredo373" oh and have a good day.
To call yourself prepared for the Nether, you have to have a set of iron armor and an iron sword/axe. Bring some cobblestone to make a little base or dig into the wall. Did you know you can plant in the Nether? So bring some seeds (wheat, pumpkin, watermelon). Hope this helped.

I am the Magic Man! I win again, as usual!
