Well i got bad news for u guys to start a 2 player u might have to press the game pad button so it can show on the tv only then u have to press + on the 2nd controller and then choice a mii character, bad thing about this, is that u can't have 1 person on game pad with that screen and the 2nd player on the TV i try it won't allow.
u might want to have the 2nd controller on if u using pro controller u must have that on as well, to get it work also u need to start game before doing that sense it appear when the 2nd controller is on to do split screen
I would like to play Minecraft Wii U Edition (just recently downloaded) with my boy on one common TV screen (and the Philips TV is in 1080P HD mode, connected to the Wii U console via HDMI cable).
And we go the gamepad working fine, but we did not get a second "Wii MotionPlus INSIDE" controller running so far. 😭 ... independent if we switch the gamepad to TV only or not.
Why not? Does anyone has an idea, what we are doing wrong? ... please save our Sunday! 😊
Many thanks in advance !!!
In case you haven't figured this out from other topics in this forum, it seems to me that the answer lies in the controller you're using.
The local multiplayer ONLY works with the Gamepad and Wii U Pro Controllers (and so far ONLY official Nintendo brand Wii U Pro Controllers). Wii Remotes, Wii Remotes "with MotionPlus INSIDE", and any other controller type WILL NOT WORK in Minecraft for Wii U.
Hi I'm a mother of a 5 year old boy I'm 27 years old. I feel pretty tech savvy but for some reason even though I've read your postings 10x it still doesn't work. Is there any way you can show a literal step by step instruction. Please include a literal visual of what buttons u are pressing on the pro controller, when you press the lower corner TV/game controller button, etc. no one else has a valid information on how to do this. I'm really confused and need help. Thank you for your time!

Alright ... try this.
Step #1 ... Create New/Load World.
Step #2 ... Once the world is loaded, the gamepad will show EXACTLY what is displayed on the television. EXCEPT that the gamepad screen will also have a tiny icon in the lower-right hand corner that looks like a tiny gamepad with an arrow pointing to a tiny TV. Here is a picture I found online. Unfortunately, you can't see the icon because of the glare. HOWEVER, that in itself should tell you where to find this tiny icon. TOUCH THE ICON.
Step #3 ... As soon as you tap the icon, the gamepad screen will display a placeholder screen that is nothing more than a rough background and a simple dirt Minecraft block. You are now playing ONLY on the television.
Step #4 ... Activate your additional controllers (Wii U Pro Controllers ONLY ... and at present ONLY official licensed Nintendo brand ones) by pressing any button. Their lights should flash for a moment before becoming solid to identify which player slot the controller is acting in.
Step #5 ... Press the (+) button on the Wii U Pro Controller (this is the "START" button that the screen prompts keep talking about). The television screen will then switch to split-screen mode and the new player will be prompted to choose a Mii to identify which person is playing. If you choose an already created Mii, the game state for that Mii will be saved with the rest of the save data so that every time that Mii joins that particular world they start in the same place with the same equipment that they had before. If you choose a guest Mii, I'm guessing something different happens (I've never done it).
We just purchased three wii u pro controllers to allow the entire family to play minecraft. They work for other games on the Wii u, but I can't get them to work for the minecraft game. Pressing the start button does not add another player. I've read through dozens of threads but can figure out the problem. Anybody have any ideas?

As you should have seen if you indeed read through these threads, there is an issue with 3rd party Pro Controllers (that is any Wii U Pro Controller that was made and sold by a company OTHER than Nintendo). They will connect to the game and work fine with other game titles, but they DO NOT function properly in Minecraft. The game company is aware of the issue and is working to resolve it (no news as to when yet).
If you read through my DETAILED step-by-step above, you will see that pressing the Start button is not enough. You need to switch from Gamepad AND TV viewing to TV viewing only BEFORE you can press start on the other controllers.
I believe there is also a requirement that you be playing the game in HD mode in order to enable multi-player. Since that's all we do, I don't know off-hand how to verify this, but I believe there are other replies to topics in this forum that address that question specifically.
So what you have to do is when you open up the world there is a button the bottom right hand of the gamepad. When you click this the gamepad screen will turn to a simple background with a dirt block in the middle. then turn on a regular wii remote and connect a wii pro controller to it. then click start on the wii pro controller and pick a mii. after this two screens will be on the tv and player two will be on the bottom. Hope I helped!
To play split screen, you must go to main menu, go on a world/ make one, than when you get to the world edit screen, tap the gameplay and a grass block with a dirt backround. Then you must create/enter your world and then connect the second player on the controller and it should work.
You need to go into the wii u settings and change the default 420p to 1080p. I tried everything. Nothing worked. This did. You need a Nintendo pro controller too.
Folks: this is extremely frustrating for our family.
We have followed all instructions
- hdmi 720p
- all exclusive nintendo manufactured equipment , wii pro controllers and gamepad
- in Tv mode only with only the minecraft block showing
and we pressed A
2nd player presses + button
- we even tried going back into minecraft settings to select split screen
it never offers to pick a second player or splits the screen for us.
Dear Nintendo gurus ,
what are we NOT doing??? Please fix this bug.
I've been playing the offline multiplayer for a while with no problems setting it up. Here is what I've done:
1) Once playing the game with the Wii U pad, touch the icon on the Wii U pad to make the game viewable on the TV only.
2) Next bring out the Wii U Pro controller made by Nintendo, push the A button and then the TV should now be displaying press Start for the second player to join.
3) Have fun.
Do you have to start on the gamepad?
I have the same problem. I press start on the second controller and nothing happens. Does local multiplayer work for anyone?

Where is the button to show on the tv only???
This video has some useful info:

When plying on the main controller there is an icon bottom right. Tapping this will switch gameplay to the TV.
in order for more players to join you must have your wii connected to the TV using an HDMI cable.
If your TV isn't HD, can you still play 2 player, same machine?
I believe the answer is NO. It must be in HD mode.
