@UberFubarius Well, you have clearly put some thought into that. It does go beyond the scope of my original suggestion, and could well be handled without the addition of a Hammock at all. I was merely suggesting a balancing method to prevent potential abuse of the two time skipping devices, what you have there is a great idea for a mod. I think it would work well, and I even have modpack that it would suit perfectly. How about we make a topic in the mapping/modding section and see if we can get some interest drummed up there? I would like to see what other players think though, as I'm not prepared to rule out such a well thought out idea.
Thank you for the encouragement. I'll put this as a separate Suggestion thread. I've absolutely no idea on how to mod (only have general idea on programming, not so much on modding Minecraft).
As you both have similar ideas about the placement of the Hammock, I thought I'd answer both of you together. Having the Hammock hang between trees, as well as fences, is a good idea, it makes sense and I'm not even sure why I didn't think of it myself. I was also thinking that maybe it could be bouncy like the Slime Blocks? The Redstone functionality is an interesting suggestion, and I'm sure budding trap or map-makers could find many uses for this feature, and would add a further feature to separate it from the standard Bed.
After a bit of searching I have discovered the mod Decocraft has a hammock, but it is not the type of mod I'd be willing to use, and has many repeats of blocks found in other more popular mods. That being said, I encourage anyone who wants the mere aesthetics of a hammock in Minecraft, albeit modded, to check it out.
- If monsters near, can't sleep.
- As per the wiki, if game time between 12541 and 23458, you can sleep till day.
Hammocks need only reverse the time checks. If the time is between 23458 and 12541, you can sleep till night. Alternatively, just add that check to the existing bed and no need for an extra block/object. If its night, hop in, bam its day. Turn around and hop back in bed, dam its night.
(And for the record, I would like the hammock instead, and include the double day/night sleep feature on both. I like variety.)

Well it's been a little while, and there hasn't been much response, the poll is pretty even, though I'm not entirely certain that I explained it very well. Still not sure whether or not the hammock should be able to reset spawn, but I imagine if enough people have differing opinions on the matter we could see another poll. I'll leave the first post as is for now, but if anyone has any suggestions on things that they think are missing, or need explaining better, I will do my best to address such concerns.
That's quite a lot of text for what amounts to a BUMP
I've edited the first post to outline the fact that I'd intended the Hammock to be placed between two objects, such as trees, fences, etc. I've been considering that Tripwire Hooks could be used as part of the recipe, though not sure if that's necessary given the Slime and String used in my current suggested recipe to make the Leads.
Also, it seems as if people are less bothered about balance, in regards to the rapid skipping of day and night using both a Bed and a Hammock in quick succession. Perhaps with quadruple the amount of votes in the poll, we shall have a better idea of peoples thoughts on this aspect.
i like the idea of sleeping through the day but i don't like the idea of sleeping through the night then sleeping through the day because it makes the other one pointless
but right now 50% support
if you cant sleep in the bed and then use the hammock that next day then full 100% support

Hello again StormCrow1770. I'm still not sure about using Fences in the recipe, as I like the idea of being able to place a Hammock between two blocks. I do like the idea of adding Tripwire Hooks into the recipe as standard, no real need to differentiate between a Trapped Hammock and a regular one.
While I'm at it, what do you think of bouncy Hammocks? There's Slime in the string, Slime is bouncy, Hammocks should be bouncy. I see no need for everything to be super serious, and if we're going to suggest something, we may as well go the whole hog, right?
So, potential new recipe, now with Carpets:

Very nice. Support!
Though given the advent of carpet, it would make more sense to use that in the recipe. (instead of wool)
Some people have pointed out the fact that you could just switch between bed and hammock to speed through time, which does pose a problem. as others have mentioned, however, a hunger mechanic would work well with this. another possibility would be to have it require a certain amount of fullness/saturation/both to use. (Because you sleep better when you're not hungry.) again, another idea: limit the timing to the afternoon, so players are required to wait at least 1/4 of a day cycle if they just woke up from bed.
If properly balanced, this could also be great as a early-game spawn option, as it would require less wool to make. However, as a balancer, you'd be forced to sleep through the day and be awake during the night, meaning you still have to deal with all the monsters, and maybe even more than normal. (following the idea of the hammock being a day-based version of the bed.)
@Bloodyghost The Leads were added instead of String as skipping to the night has the potential to allow a player access to a great deal of the Slime required. If you can think of a balanced alternative though, please feel free to mention it and we can discuss it further.
@swyrl Check my post just above yours, it's been mentioned by Homerharry, and taken into account for the future suggested recipe.
In regards to any balancing mechanism, I'm attempting to take that into account with the recipe. I know others will likely disagree, so another poll may be in order, especially if we get a few more suggestions in this particular area. I'd never really envisioned the Hammock as an early-game replacement for a bed, instead something a player could set out to earn.

Could've fooled me, I think it's great. Thanks ever so much!

Beds seem to work with simple checks.
