Maybe it's just me, but sometimes I want to skip the day. Maybe I've gone through the night killing mobs, collecting drops, levelling up and day comes and I have to fill my time with busy work to pass the time again until the sun sets, maybe I've just finished a new build and I just can't wait until sunset to see how it looks. Whatever the reason I think skipping the night would be a nice option. I'm fully aware that this could be done with /time set night, but Minecraft is all about options, and I think this would be a nice one.
Here is my suggested recipe, but I would appreciate any input others have:
An awesome Hammockup was submitted by mute00 (thanks again):
As for placement of the Hammock, I think it should be able to hang, that is be one block from the floor, suspended between two trees, fences, etc. as shown in the image above.

I like the idea of a hammock. Two wide block, must be placed between trees, fences, etc.. I would recommend needing it to be outside, but... it's kinda hard to define 'outside' when villagers define 'houses' as a block within 15 blocks of a door.
I personally think that it would just be easier if we could use the bed to sleep through the day. Adding another item that does something an already existing item is capable of seems kind of redundant.
I really like the idea, but I agree with Xenophobia that a kind of balancing thing needs to be added. As an example, you could just sleep through several days and nights to get it to be full moon to get slimes to spawn. And otherwise it just seems weird to me
Otherwise, Full Support.
Perhaps have sleeping result in using up half-drumstick worth of food per hour? And prevent player from sleeping it they have 0 food left?

I like it. Of course, there is a need for a bit of balancing. I like the food requirement to use idea. I also like making them a little tougher to get. Here are some crafting table ideas if you want them, the second two being a little harder to get as they require the player to have silk touch.

first i fully support this topic and i was just thinking about this the other day. and to Mute00 i like the first one the most. not because its the easiest but because to me at least it makes the most sense.

Woah, a lot more interest in this than I had anticipated. Firstly, let me just say that with regard to balance; if you're in SSP you can still have cheats enabled if you want that option and can just as easily get slime balls that way, in SMP you're going to have to wait until nobody else is about to sleep again and again to pass both night and day continuously. Which brings me to my second point: the recipe. After a little thought, and reading through the above suggestions, how about 2 Leads being included in the crafting, that way at least one slime needs to be killed before anyone can make one.
Maybe the points about balance are entirely valid to the point that Mojang have already ruled out the idea as a no go, though I think if we put our heads together we can come up with a reasonable middle ground. I was also thinking of a cool-down time on beds and hammocks as a possible preventative measure to 'sleep spamming', but that literally just popped into my head as I was about to close this up. Anyway guys, let me know what you think.
The only thing is it needs more balance like let's say you just slept through the night and its a brand new morning and you decide I want to make it night again right after waking up... well I don't think you should be able to skip till day until at least noon because you will already have been rested and wouldn't fall asleep easily (basically unless this balance was added it would be pretty much the same as /time set day/night command).. But if you went the whole night without sleeping and day comes you could sleep because you character would be tired.
Okay, looks like we're getting a few suggestions for a potential recipe. Here's my attempt:
Any thoughts?
@mute00 I like the idea of the vines recipe, as requiring a player to find a Stronghold or Abandoned Mineshaft before they can put their feet up for the day seems a bit harsh. I could be wrong in this, and I'd like to hear what others think. Will make another poll if it becomes necessary. Also, I like your jungle bed, not quite what I was thinking though; as thetitan555 said have the Hammock need a two block wide gap between two fence posts or trees, and I'd say at least one block off the floor too, merely for the aesthetics.
I will edit the first post after a little more feedback, and we'll see where we're at.

I have absolutely nothing worthwhile to do with my time today, so I learned a bit of Blender and made another rough composite of what a hammock could potentially look like. I really like hammocks.
@UberFubarius I like your thinking, although hours in Minecraft are hard to represent. How about using a Hammock entirely depletes Saturation, and half the hunger bar, that way sleeping through two days consecutively would be suicide?
@herobrine123x_ I'm not sure I see your point, my suggested recipe does not contain any vines. Though, I suppose, Slimes can be no easier to find than Cobwebs it just seems a bit harsh to not only find them but also have enchantments as well. Again, a poll will probably be added within a day or so.
@mute00 Really liking that canvas cot design you have there, it's a bit basic, but it works in a Minecraft way. If you can get the textures for the Fence posts (assuming that's what they are) the Leads, and the Hammock itself, I'd like to add that image to the first post, with your permission of course.
To anyone who thinks this redundant, technically so are beds, there was nothing stopping Notch from adding a right-click function to the Clock to pass the time. That is just my opinion though, and I thank you for sharing yours.

I would be a bit more precise then going "deplete saturation and half the hunger bar".
The way I would go about it is to look at current hunger system.
First, 1 minecraft day is 20 minutes in real life. 1 minecraft hour is 50 seconds.
Walking adds 0.01 to exhaustion level per meters (4 exhaustion level = half a drumstick)
Player speed is about 4.3 m/s (let's round that down to 4 m/s for a nice round number).
This mean that if a player is walking continuously, they'll raise their exhaustion level by 0.04 per second.
This means that every 100 real-life seconds (2 hours in Minecraft) the player will lose half a drumstick (whether from saturation or other).
This also mean that over 20 minutes (1200 seconds), player will lose a total of 6 drumsticks.
Furthermore, taking into account that I also want this/similar suggestion to allow for a sort of nocturnal play-style (player only becomes active at night), I would suggest the following.
There's a new hidden stat called the sleep state counter, which default to 4 when player first spawns (the counter do not reset to 3 if player dies and then respawn). The sleep counter can range in value from -4 to 4.
If sleep state counter is >2, that means the player is Diurnal (active at day) and can sleep during Night with no penalty. Conversely, if player's sleep state counter is <-2, that means the player is Nocturnal (active at night) and can sleep during Day time with no penalty. If sleep state counter is between -2 and 2, that means the player's sleep cycle is "Disrupted", and sleeping during Day or Night will incur a penalty.
The sleep state counter is updated base on the following conditions. The update values are "per hours slept". Dusk and Dawn hours are not counted.
Counter > 0 (tending toward Diurnal): -0.1 if sleeping during day. +0.07 if sleeping at night. (-1 on full day sleep, +0.5 on full night)
Counter < 0 (tending toward Nocturnal): -0.07 if sleeping during day. +0.14 if sleeping at night. (-0.5 on full day sleep, +1 on full night)
Note that the above sleep state counter updates means that if player keep trying to sleep through the days, the values will trend toward middle (the sleep "Disrupted" state).
Player sleeping when they're in Disrupted sleep state will receive a penalty when sleeping. The penalty may be one or more of the following.
A hunger penalty of +4 exhaustion level per hours (half drum-stick per two hours).
One or more of the following status effect for a random time (1~2 minutes): Weakness, Slowness, Mining Fatigue.
Player will receive warning if they're trying to sleep at the "wrong" time.
If player is fully Diurnal/Nocturnal: "I don't feel sleepy...", player can force themselves to sleep.
If player is "Disrupted": "So tired...", player must sleep anyway to get out of that state, this is just a warning that they'll receive a penalty while sleeping.
Overall, what does this mean in total?
Player has the option for Nocturnal game-play style.
Switching between Diurnal/Nocturnal takes some effort (need to have food stockpiled, and milk to get rid of the negative status effect for a few days/nights).
Repeated sleeping through the day and night will cause player to remain in "Disrupted" state, which incurs penalty in sleeps in both day and night.
A well prepared player can still sleep through the day and night (need lots of food).
@UberFubarius Well, you have clearly put some thought into that. It does go beyond the scope of my original suggestion, and could well be handled without the addition of a Hammock at all. I was merely suggesting a balancing method to prevent potential abuse of the two time skipping devices, what you have there is a great idea for a mod. I think it would work well, and I even have modpack that it would suit perfectly. How about we make a topic in the mapping/modding section and see if we can get some interest drummed up there? I would like to see what other players think though, as I'm not prepared to rule out such a well thought out idea.

No, I just feel it'd be a bit imbalanced if you could just sleep for days.

EDIT: And yes, balance is relevant.

You get vines by using shears on them.

This one is canvas cot style.
